Tuthill Lofts
The Tuthill Lofts take their name from William H. Tuthill, who kept a restaurant here and lived in the rooms above it. He ran the place with his wife — first on one side of the building, later on the other — until they sold up and retired in 1905.
The storefronts turned over for a century after him: a butter-and-egg dealer, an undertaker, a cleaner and presser, the Chicken Grill, a tavern, a lounge.
Today the building holds three shops at street level and two lofts above. The same arrangement Tuthill knew, a hundred and thirty years on.
